CCSD mourns the tragic death of a former school board member
Manning— January 27, 2024 —It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we announce the passing of Mayor Tony Junious, a dedicated and esteemed member of our school district family. Mayor Junious passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to improving the Clarendon County educational and Summerton communities.
Mayor Junious served on several Clarendon County School Boards (Clarendon 1, Clarendon 4, Clarendon Consolidated Board) for a total of over 20 years until becoming Summerton’s first African American mayor in 2022. During his time on the Clarendon County School Boards, Mayor Junious championed numerous initiatives that significantly enhanced the district's quality of education and student life. His passion for educational excellence, equity, and community engagement was evident in every decision and action he took.
In addition to his role on the board, Mayor Junious was an active member of the community, often volunteering at school events, advocating for student programs, mentoring young leaders, and providing scholarships and funding dinners for Scott’s Branch High School seniors. His dedication to service extended beyond the school walls, touching the lives of many in our county and, most definitely, the city of Summerton.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mayor Junious, who was a valued member of our school board and a cherished pillar in our educational community. His dedication to our schools, commitment to educational excellence, and passion for student success were unparalleled. Likewise, the impact on our district and the lives of those he touched will be felt for many years to come,” stated Dr. Shawn Johnson, CCSD Superintendent. We have lost a remarkable individual, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all through the completion of projects he fought for in the Summerton community. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time."
As we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate the remarkable contributions that Mayor Tony Junious made to CCSD and the town of Summerton as a whole. His legacy will continue to inspire current and future generations within Clarendon County Schools. We hope that all of his hard work in our schools and the city of Summerton will assist in catapulting the ideas of continuous improvement through economic growth projects and educational excellence. Details of the service will be shared with our community in the coming days.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Mayor Tony Junious’ family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. We kindly ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
