CCSD Schools Continue to Achieve Academic Success
Clarendon County School District students show continual growth
Manning— September 6, 2023 — Since the COVID-19 pandemic, all Clarendon County School District schools have worked hard to ensure that students continue learning and growing. The pandemic significantly impacted students at all levels of education. These challenges have varied in intensity and scope. While the challenges were widespread, our schools have worked hard to adapt and find innovative solutions to help our students succeed academically. CCSD scores show the continuous hard work occurring in our district. Below are the state rating scales from the South Carolina Department of Education.
Based on student scores, district schools receive points toward their overall ratings.
0 points for students in the Does Not Meets category
1 point for students in the Approaches category
2 points for students in the Meets category
3 points for students in the Exceeds category
As a public school institution, CCSD is focused on meeting students where they are in their learning. CCSD principals have identified improvement areas and developed action plans to focus on these areas. In the district, math and science are areas of concern.
“We must stop trying to manufacture problems but rather manufacture solutions, which is what we do in this school district,” stated Arthur Moyd, Chairman of the CCSD Board of Trustees. “Even though a student may be in the Approaches category, the school gains points for their growth towards its overall ratings. All our elementary and middle schools are performing well with an Average or better rating.”
CCSD Superintendent Dr. Shawn Johnson has seen the growth in Clarendon County schools and understands how misunderstanding the data can be an issue.
“I will no longer continue to acknowledge the efforts of those who work to diminish the work of our students, parents, teachers, faculty, and School Board. If we are going to report factual information, you must do so in a way that does not distort the efforts of our district. If anyone has any suggestions to assist in the teaching and learning of our students, we are willing to listen.”
